CAT 1994 Question-2

Q.)Which is the least number that must be substracted from 1856, so that the remainder when divided by 7,12 and 16 is 4?

A)137
B)1361
C)140
D)172

Solution :

least number which is divisible by 7,12 and 16 = 336

So, the number which when divided by 7,12 and 16 leaves a remainder 4 will be of the form 336n+4.

So, the closest number to 1856 which will be divisible by 7,12 and 16 and leaves a remainder 4 = 336 *5+4 = 1680+4 = 1684

SO, the number which should be substracted from 1856 so that it becomes 1684 = 1856-1684 = 172.

Hence , the least required number = 172.
